What is Botulinum Therapy (Wrinkle relaxing Injections)?

The treatment consists of injecting a very small amount of Botox, Jeuvau, Xeomin , ... etc. (Botulinum toxin) into a specific muscle of the face or neck which weakens the muscle and improves the wrinkle lines caused by that muscle. 

When do you see Botox  results on the face?

Beneficial smoothing response is usually gradually improving from  3-15 days after injection. 

When you need to redo Botox injections?

The muscle action (and wrinkles) will return in 3-4months. At this point, a repeat treatment will relax muscle and soften the lines again. Sometimes the condition will need additional touch ups/follow ups which can be done 12-21 days after initial treatment. 

What are Possible side effects from Botox facial injections?

 These include: transient headache, swelling, bruising, pain during injection, twitching, itching, numbness, asymmetry, temporary dropping of eyelids or eyebrows. These side effects are rare, but have been reported. In a very small number of individuals, the injection does not work as satisfactory. 

Are there any medications which can potentiate the side effects?

Substances that increase the risk of bruising include Vitamin E, Asprin, Motrin, Coumadin, other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and blood thinners. For these reasons it is usually advised that the person receiving Botox injections stops t using these medications in the five days prior to to the procedure. Usually it is important to inform your medical professional of any medications you are currently taking  on the day of the procedure including any OTC medications.

Are there any instructions after getting Botox  injections?

Commonly, clients undergoing Botox injections are advised to refrain from exercise, massage or bending forward for the first few hours after the procedures. Adherence to this advice will prevent the spreading of injected substances far from the targeted injection site which can reduce the beneficial cosmetic effect  of Botulinum substance. 

Are there any contraindications for Botox injections?

There are some relative  contraindications to Botox therapy which includes pregnancy, breast feeding and Myasthenia gravis  (neurological disease characterized by severe weakness of muscles). 

Why sometimes the wrinkles are not improved by Botox  injections?

When using Botox the best results are often achieved when targeting  dynamic facial lines which are caused by facial muscle activity (expressions like frowning, smiling...etc). But when Botox is  used to treat static facial lines which are the lines present at rest (usually person did not get Botox except very late)  it may or may not improve. 

Is there benefit from repeating Botox treatment every 3-4 months?

Yes regular repeat Botox treatment every 3-4 months will prevent formation of static permanent  lines which may be resistant to treatment.
