What are Dermal Fillers ?
Dermal Fillers are facial injectables used to smooth Marionette, Nasolabial folds lines. They can augment cheek bone , chin and lips. They can define Jawlines and fill under eye (tear trough) or temple hollow. They can lift cheek and Jowls (indirectly by volume effect). These include immediate Hayluronic acid fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, Versa etc. . There are collagen activating (Biostimulant) fillers like Sculptra which start enhancing skin thickness and quality in about 6 -8 weeks , need to be repeated 2-3 times to get the good effect. There is also Radiesse which can have both immediate and delayed effect depending on concentration to get degrees of skin lifting and tightening . The last two fillers are usually used with more mature individuals to compensate for collagen loss
What is the duration of the procedure and if there is down time?
It usually takes from 10-30 minutes according to the injected area and number of syringes . There is usually no down time except for restriction of physical exercise and sun for one or two days. Most people will go to work directly after finishing the procedure.
Are results of HA fillers immediate?
Although HA fillers like Juvederm & Restylane has immediate effect. you have to remember that bruising caused by capillary bleed under skin may affect the immediate facial look during the first week so you have to wait at least 7 days to examine final results of HA fillers.
How long HA filler effect will last?
Because the filler material will gradually break down and be absorbed by the body, the effect will gradually wear out. and you may need a repeat maintenance injection . This longevity of filler depends on the specific brand used , facial area injected and person metabolic rate, results. It can last from 2-3 month in lip and up to to 12 month or more under eye.
Are dermal fillers safe to inject?
Although most patients do not experience complications, injection point bruising , swelling and soreness is common , especially in persons using aspirin, iburporfen, blood thinner or vitamin C. Herpes exacerbation is common with lip injection, So you should abstain from filler injection if there any recent viral or bacterial infection on the area of injection
Are there any serious risk from dermal fillers?
There is a minimal risk of serious complications like infection, nodule , granuloma, abscess formation and hypersensitivity reactions. Also there is very rare risk of vessel occlusion (vascular embolism) leading to local skin necrosis , ischemia, gangrene, blindness partial or total, focal brain injury, stroke. These rare side effects were encountered with specific injections namely glabella , frontal area , temple and nose in succession. So these areas are considered high risk areas and should only be injected if absolutely necessary with highly trained injector.
Does filler injection hurts?
For most people the answer is No. Dermal fillers are injected into the skin using a fine needle to reduce injection discomfort. Also, most fillers have a local anesthetic mixed with the active substance to reduce pain. Even so, some unusually sensitive people may need topical numbing cream or gel for pain especially on the lips. Occasionally, patients may have tenderness, redness or swelling which subside within few days.
Are there any precautions to be observed before and after Filler
It is usually advised to avoid medications aggravating bruising like aspirin, iburpofen, Fish oil and vitamin C for few days before and after to reduce bruising. Please inform the injector with any current prescription medication. minimize exposure of treated areas to excessive sunlight, sauna or UV lamp. The use of alcohol should also be avoided for the next 24 hours. Recently it was recommended to avoid vaccination and dental cleaning one or two week before and after dermal filler to prevent rare immune reactions. Autoimmune disease like Rheumatoid and S.L. may increase possible allergic reactions from fillers.
Are dermal fillers safe during pregnancy?
Dermal fillers although not tested in pregnancy, are injected locally under skin and have no systemic effect. it is not encouraged because hormone changes of pregnancy including water retention puffiness can reduce benefit of fillers.
Can you dissolve my facial filler?
Yes we have a special medication (Hyaluronidase) which can dissolve your HA dermal filler. But it is usually advised to wait for one week after receiving filler injection for bruising to subside .
