Laser hair removal uses a concentrated light beam to reduce or permanently remove unwanted hair. Most patients require 3 to 8 sessions, depending on factors like the treatment area, skin tone, hair color , thickness, and individual response. While the procedure can offer long-lasting results, its effectiveness varies—darker, coarser hair responds best, while light-colored hair (blonde, red, gray, or fine peach fuzz) may not respond well. Results also depend on skin complexion and ethnicity.
Laser hair removal may not be suitable for individuals with the following conditions or circumstances:
1. Use of photosensitizing medications or topical products (e.g., Retin-A, hydroquinone within 3 days).
2. Recent use of self-tanners or tanning beds.
3. Unshaven hair in the treatment area on the day of the procedure.
4. Recent plucking or waxing (within 2 weeks prior).
5. Recent sun exposure or sunburn (within 2 weeks).
6. Tattoos or permanent makeup in the treatment area.
7. History of intramuscular gold therapy.
8. Very light or absent pigmentation (e.g., albinism, white, grey, or blonde hair).
9. Pregnancy.
10. Active herpes simplex virus (Type I or II) in the treatment area.
11. Broken, irritated, or inflamed skin.
12. Use of Accutane or tetracycline (must be discontinued for at least 8 weeks).
13. Certain medical conditions including diabetes, epilepsy, and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
⚠️ Laser hair removal is generally safe when performed by trained professionals, but some side effects can occur. Short-term effects may include redness, mild burning, temporary bruising, or small blisters. These typically resolve within a few hours to a few days.
Delayed side effects such as hyperpigmentation (dark spots) or hypopigmentation (light spots) may appear but usually fade within 3 to 6 months. Though rare, infection or pinpoint bleeding can occur in some cases.
