Approved Uses: 

• Primarily approved for the management of type 2 diabetes.
• Also approved under the brand name Wegovy  for weight management in people with obesity (BMI > 30) or overweight (BMI > 27 with weight related comorbid conditions.

Effectiveness: 

• Effective in lowering blood glucose levels and promoting weight loss.
• Studies show significant weight loss in addition to blood sugar control.

* Some recent studies showed that it may help with smoking dependence and alcohol abuse. 

Common Side Effects: 

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. There is potential for pancreatitis and thyroid tumors (very rare).

Weight Loss:

Clinical trials indicate significant weight loss (up to 15% of body weight) in patients using semaglutide.

Mechanism of Action: Tirzepatide is a dual GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It targets both the GIP and GLP-1 pathways to improve blood glucose control and promote weight loss.

Administration: 

Administered once weekly via subcutaneous injection. The dose should be titrated with a gradual increasing dose for tolerance.

Effectiveness: 

Demonstrates strong efficacy in controlling blood glucose levels and has shown greater weight loss compared to some other diabetes medications in clinical trials.

Common Side Effects: 

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. There is also potential for very rare  side effects as thyroid tumor and pancreatitis.

Weight Loss: 

Clinical trials suggest that tirzepatide may lead to even greater weight loss compared to semaglutide, with some studies showing up to 20% of body weight reduction.

• Efficacy: Both medications are effective for diabetes management and weight loss, but tirzepatide may offer slightly more pronounced weight loss benefits based on current data.
• Mechanism: Ozempic works through a single GLP-1 pathway, while Munjaro targets both GLP-1 and GIP pathways, potentially offering enhanced effects.
• Side Effects: Both have similar side effect profiles, though individual responses can vary.
